The Canadian Government has established the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) with the aim of attracting and retaining world-class doctoral students.

This initiative not only seeks to foster academic excellence but also positions Canada as a global hub for research and higher learning. 

The scholarships are dedicated to doctoral degrees, including combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD programs, ultimately contributing to Canada's research landscape.

Fields of Study and Eligibility

The Vanier CGS targets PhD programs, including combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD programs, across various critical domains. 

These encompass health research, natural sciences and engineering research, as well as social sciences and humanities research. To be eligible, a doctoral program must have a substantial research component leading to the completion of a thesis, research project, dissertation, or scholarly publication, reviewed by experts at the institutional level.

Joint graduate research programs with professional degrees, such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD, are also eligible, provided they have a significant autonomous research component. 

Moreover, clinical psychology and other clinically-oriented programs with research components are eligible for consideration.

Application and Selection Process

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota. 

The application process is initiated either by the student expressing their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program to the faculty of graduate studies at the chosen institution, or through the institution's nomination of desired candidates.

Applications are diligently prepared by the candidates and submitted to the nominating institution within the stipulated timeframe. 

The institution then forwards the recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by the deadline of November 1, 2023.
